Understanding Alexa Rank

Alexa is a reputable website that counts statistics about every website in the world.  Alexa then publishes its research through several methods with the best known method being known as “Alexa Rank”.  It works like this, the lower your website scores, the less websites between you and the top position in the world according to Alexa.  If your website is continually getting a lower score, this is a good thing.  Having good Alexa Rank is considered by most to be a major contributor to where your website will be placed within most search engine results.  Of course it is not the only factor but it helps to know your site is getting better scores than the day before and yes the results change that quickly.

So how can you try to make a website that has a healthy Alexa Rank?

There are many things you can do wrong but the best thing is to remember, Alexa is a facts and figures driven resource.  Remember, the rank is only a reflection of the statistics your website is generating, so the general idea is to improve the statistics to improve the score. This can be done with hard work and devotion to your site by means of the usual rank building techniques like advertising, article writing, blog and directory link building just to name a few.  It can also be done through methods not so legitimate attempting to distort the statistics but this defeats the purpose of using this free service which is to try and get a real estimation of your websites place in the web.  Up till now Alexa rank is generated using stats generated by users of the Alex Toolbar.  So these stats are not indicative of the whole internet traffic but are a good sample to gage your site by.

So what statistics are gathered?

Actually there are lots of different points of contact that are recorded on each website, every day.  The main one that is of importance is how many visitors attend a website and what kind of visitor they are.  Hits on a website include visitors such as search engine robots (programs sent to analyse your website) and other non-human visitors. Hits are of interest to Alexa but not so much to the website owner. Statistics on human visitors when separated from general hits, reveal information such as how likely a site is to be making sales.  Some sites will use this to place an estimate of your website based purely on how Alexa has ranked the site upon information gathered about human visitors.

-How many visitors
-How long did the visit lasz
-How many pages were visited
-What were the site entry and exit points
-Global location

Compare this to some of the information a search engine gleans from a websites statistics

-All of the above
-How many links on a page
-How many backlinks a page has
-Search results compared to website contents

So having looked at this the clever website owner needs to realise that the Alexa rank is a good indicator of many of the things a search engine will be looking at.  A clever website owner will be looking at how to improve a sites promotion angled at each item in the above list through...

-Increasing the visitors
-Increasing the time spent
-Increasing the pages perused
-Targeting specific entry points towards products or services when creating more backlinks.
-Understanding the weaknesses of a site by monitoring exit points or even trying for after sales based on the knowledge of where they are likely to exit.
-Understanding a visitors most likely culture because of the location
-Using good site seo

Then there is one more thing to do that most do not get involved in. Spending the time to monitor the effect on search results according to changes made on your website.  Remember sometimes it is better to reverse a change on a site until you understand why a change has had a negative effect

-Has my site gone up or down in the search lists because of a change I make?
-Do sales go up if I locate a link on the left or right of a page?
-Does changing a colour or font change sales or possibly the length of time a visitor attends?

Take the time to study these kind of stats and you will see your search engine results go up faster than you think.
